The timing is unfortunate for former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, who I'm sure thought he was being really clever by announcing on YouTube, taking down the video, then putting it back up again. Instead, it just looked ham-handed and technologically tone-deaf.
What I mean is there is a larger timing issue for Rubio, and that issue has a name: Charlie Crist. Sorry, Marco, but when the Buzz is gauging Governor Crist's reaction to your candidacy ("Oh. OK"), then you know something is not quite right.
There's more.
True, it's hard to say where we'll be next year, but the trend seems to be towards support for the reasoned, sensible politics of, say a Barack Obama, and less of say, the insane, crackpot Club for Growth... which endorsed Rubio today. By the way, under Rubio's Speakership, people actually left Florida. In droves. For pretty much the first time in history. Someone remind me: how is he good for "growth," again?
What's more -- as the Democrats pointed out -- Marco seems intent on being one of these candidates who is all about the "no." If Obama says let's do it, he'll say no, with a focus on stimulus money and "spending." Which leads me to my last point on timing. Marco may think that being the Senatorial candidate of "no" will define him well, but I encourage you to remember this: the stimulus money will be hitting Florida sooner rather than later. And right about the time we see some improvement in the economy thanks to this stimulus, right about the time Floridians are starting to "suffer" through the "horrors" of their government helping them, Marco is going to be out there banging the "no, no, no" drum. My guess is his drum line will be pretty lonely.
