I see that voting is open for the Florida Netroots Awards over at the Florida Progressive Coalition. Before I work my word voodoo on you, control your mind, and make you vote for people I like, let me take a minute to thank Kenneth Quinnell, who always works really hard on this.
I have been nominated in a number of categories -- Best National Blog; Best Writer; Best Use of Twitter -- and I am honored that someone took the time to think of me and include me in this process. I am even more honored to be included with some really, really great people. I hope you'll go check out their work right away.
As I think I have explained before, I don't nominate myself for these awards. I use it as a platform to nominate others, and to get to know other great bloggers and writers out there. I'm also not going to campaign for myself when I have been nominated. If you see fit to vote for me in one of those categories, please know that you have my sincere appreciation and thanks.
I usually don't "campaign" (such as it is or would be) for other folks. But I'm going to make a couple of general exceptions here regarding the Awards, one of which is likely going to get me in hot water, but whatever.
I nominated the Ybor City Stogie for the Progressive Courage Award. Look at that description again:
Florida politician or political activist who has been a leader on a particular progressive issue in the last year, making a difference in the lives of Floridians.
I nominated him for the amazing work he continues to do highlighting the issue of homelessness in the Tampa Bay area. He does this by keeping what amounts to a running photo journal of homeless people, up close and personal, right there on his blog. When you see these folks face to face, it's really breathtaking.
And it is exactly the kind of work progressives should be doing.
And in a number of ways, it is courageous. Thus my nomination. I hope you'll look at the work from the Ybor City Stogie, and I urge you to vote for him.

Ben, thank you very much!
