I'm one of these infuriating Democrats who insist on supporting gun rights.
That is, I support the rights of law-abiding gun owners to bear arms in a responsible, well-regulated way.
With respect to the "law-abiding, responsible, and well-regulated" parts, I'm too often disappointed.
Just take Fourth of July. What half-baked goofballs think it's a good idea to fire a gun in the air in celebration? Hell, for any reason? You don't need a physics degree to know the bullets don't lodge themselves in Mars. They fall back to earth.
And sometimes with terrible consequences, like this:

...and this:
Falling bullet injures Clearwater man watching July Fourth fireworks
Come on. We all readily acknowledge how unsafe fireworks can be. Somehow pointing the barrel of your 9 millimeter is supposed to make it better?
This is one of those times you might hope to hear from some sort of association, maybe a national one, one that advocated for the rights of rifle and gun owners... Hm. Who could that be.
Now, I do appreciate that the NRA has several gun safety programs. But they missed the boat, here. Look at their website. Is there one thing about refraining from using a deadly weapon as a tool of celebration, especially on the 4th of July?
Not a word. What a shame.
People, when it's party time, put the goddam guns away.
