In the last Into the Echo Chamber -- watch for the latest installment later this evening -- Matt wrote very movingly about the murder rate in Chicago.
Via HuffingtonPost, here's a piece which really underscores that:
Gun violence has plagued Chicago for years, but in recent months the number of incidents has grown compared to the previous year. As of the end of July, homicides in the city were up about 27 percent. Through the first quarter of the year, murders had spiked as high as 60 percent over 2011.

Paul Ryan has given Mitt Romney a bit of a bump in the polls, which isn't surprising.
We'll see this kind of thing between now and November -- through the Conventions, through the debates. I'm not going to run around with my hair on fire. As I said the other day regarding polls...
Remember: polls aren't a prediction of what folks will do -- they're a snapshot in time. More than that, they provide an accurate retrospective, a good look back at what people where thinking when.
The base is liking the Ryan pick. Once they get to know him, things will change.

Happy birthday to me.
I'm 41 today, and the hit at number 41 of 100 in 1971 was this:
Hm.
Okay.

Emmy, Finn and I heard this song on WMNF the other day as we were headed out.
This morning, Emmy started singing it to me. She got as far as "Take a letter, Maria. Address it to my wife. Send a copy to my lawyer..." I am really, really proud of her.
We're working on the rest of it together.
In the meantime, thank you R.B. Greaves, and thank you 1969 for this wildly entertaining video.
